Devil’s Night seems like the right time to be posting one more spook-centric entry before Halloween is officially upon us. I caught up with this one over the weekend and immediately thought it would make for a great post. I love to watch and write about monsters, creatures and even real life killers and ghosts during the Season of the Witch, but paying attention to the roots of our modern autumnal celebrations and adapting them to our contemporary lives can add a deeper depth to these days than just the kind we get from masks and mulled wine, tricks and treats.

I really enjoy Thomas Sheridan’s contemporary magick videos because he brings so much insight into Old World paganism to his modern everyday practices. Here he outlines some of the roots of today’s Halloween celebrations and offers some great suggestions on how you can make the most of this season by embracing darkness and loss, and letting go of any extra baggage you’ve picked up over the course of the year.

I don’t remember how old I was when I learned that Detroit was the only place with a Devil’s Night. I’m posting this on Thursday evening, but I won’t share it with anyone until Friday morning, just in time for the night before Halloween — Devil’s Night.

The film Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages was released in 1922. The silent movie tells a history of witchcraft dating from ancient times until the early days of the 20th Century. The most famous version is the 1968 release which adds a great narrative performance by William Burroughs, and a killer, abstract jazz soundtrack from Daniel Humair.

This isn’t the first time I’ve posted this for Halloween. It won’t be the last. Have a wonderful terrible celebration…

It’s been a lot of fun spending the last month blasting this blog with profane and pitiless posts in the spirit of the season, but now Halloween is finally here! But what is Halloween? Where does our modern merrymaking come from and can the roots of our own costume and trick-or-treating traditions be traced back to the holiday’s wretched roots?

This documentary takes us back to the fairy mounds, harvest feasts and pagan celebrations of ancient Ireland, and the revelries of ancient Rome to illuminate a holiday ritual that was forced underground by the coming of Christianity. From the Celtic Druids to Guy Fawkes to the birthplace of America’s Halloween traditions in the colony of Virginia, this spooky celebration still survives to this day for those with eyes to see between the worlds on this one special night of the year.
