This BBC documentary explores not only the edges of the art world, but also the edges of civilized societies around the world. As groups of people become organized, insiders may push others “outside.” Some of those societies are rigid and positions are difficult to change, but, generally, it would seem that while no one’s place may be unmovable, two things will always be true in such a culture: There will be insiders. There will be outsiders.

In the Western world, we have insiders and outsiders in most things — in the art world for sure. Turning the Art World Inside Out takes a look at outsider art from around the globe, introducing important artists identified with the moniker, and retracing the path that has brought the outsiders into the inside art world.
