The CIA just put a spotlight on a conspiracy theory classic that was found on the bookshelf of Osama bin Laden.

Let me explain: After the death of Osama bin Laden was announced the news was followed by revelations including dispatches about the volumes the world’s most wanted man kept on his bookshelf. Here’s the New York Times from 2015…

But it was the list of books found in Bin Laden’s compound that garnered the most interest Wednesday. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which managed the release, seized on Bin Laden’s reading list to promote it, titling the web page listing all the now-public material “Bin Laden’s Bookshelf.”

Some of the books would be familiar to anyone interested in global affairs, such as “Obama’s Wars,” by Bob Woodward; “The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers,” by Paul Kennedy; and “Imperial Hubris,” by Michael Scheuer, the former official who once ran the Central Intelligence Agency’s Bin Laden desk.

Other titles hinted at a paranoid worldview fostered by conspiracy theory classics such as “Bloodlines of the Illuminati,” by Fritz Springmeier, and “The Secrets of the Federal Reserve,” by Eustace Mullins, a Holocaust denier.

On July 30 the fringiest fringes of my alt news network started to buzz with the news that the CIA had actually uploaded Springmeier’s book which claims that the cultural elites in every powerful position in the world are blood relations, and that the age of monarchy never ended. We can’t ask OBL for a book review, but the conspirosphere is counting the upload as confirmation of the bloodlines theory by the agency.

Stories like this fascinate me for a lot of reasons. Conspiracy theories are often proven true, and all expression that doesn’t harm or threaten anyone else should always be championed in a democracy. Conspiracy theories are also part of our cultural mythology and they often say a lot more about who we actually are than the commercially weaponized images reflected to us in the mainstream media.

Candy-Colored Cult

I love fringe cultures and strange religious beliefs, and the world of contemporary cults is like the overlap of their Venn diagram. The Cosmic People of Light Powers have a great name, an out-of-this-world UFO-centric belief system, and a wild candy-colored aesthetic that’s on full display in their promotional videos. Universe People or Cosmic People of Light Powers (Czech: Vesmírní lidé sil světla) is a Czech and Slovak UFO religion founded in the 1990s and centered on Ivo A. Benda.[1] Their belief system is based upon the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations communicating with Benda and other contactees since October 1997 telepathically and later even by direct personal contact. They are considered to be the most distinctive UFO religion in the Czech Republic.[2]

…According to Benda, extraterrestrial civilizations operate a fleet of spaceships, led by Ashtar Galactic Command, orbiting the Earth.[7][8] They closely watch and help the good and are waiting to transport their followers into another dimension. The Universe People’s teachings incorporate various elements from ufology (some foreign contactees are credited, though often also renounced after a time as misguided or deceptive), Christianity (Jesus was a “fine-vibrations” being) and conspiracy theories (forces of evil are supposed to plan compulsory chipping of the population).[9]

Benda based his philosophy on information from many independent books, including Angels In Starships (Giorgio Dibitonto), Inside The Spaceships (George Adamski), Bringers Of The Dawn (Barbara Marciniak) and others. He also adopted parts of Swiss citizen Billy Meier’s philosophy. However, Benda’s philosophy is in some points in conflict with Meier’s and Meier has declined any contacts with Benda and does not recognize his movement.

Members of the movement distrust modern technologies and control mechanisms of the society. They consider mass media to be a tool of oppression and manipulation. Despite this, Benda often seeks contact with journalists to tell his ideas to the public. They often have problems with copyright infringement, because Benda has declared that the only copyright owners are the Universe creatures, who do not consider it important. The movement also wants to abolish money.[2]

Back Through Heaven’s Gate

The comet Hale-Bopp was visible to the naked eye in the second half of 1996 but it disappeared into sunlight before re-emerging to the visible eye for the entirety of 1997, becoming the brightest object in the sky in the spring of that year. I remember going out night after night to spot the comet on its travels. It was a marvelous novelty to have this bright burning thing above my head every night, but others were even more moved: the Heaven’s Gate cult’s 39 members took their own lives on March 26, 1997 in a bid to have their souls ascend to an alien spacecraft they believed was hidden in the comet’s tail.

The Heaven’s Gate cult wasn’t really different from any other group that seeks to control people, but the cult’s relatively recent tragedy and the plethora of video the group recorded make their story one of the most interesting contemporary cases of its kind. Revisiting Roswell

I think the J.F.K. assassination is probably the biggest conspiracy theory of all time, and it’s probably still the one that acts as the gateway for most folks who wander the mazes of the unexplained, the unknown and the covered-up. The Roswell Incident is probably a close second contender overall and it remains the king of conspiracy theories where flying saucers and extraterrestrial visitors are concerned.

There is so much confusion about the alleged crash as well as the reports of discovered debris and rescued bodies that it’s hard to pin down the actual dates of the event itself. One thing is for sure: on June 24, 1997 the U.S. Air Force published it’s 231 page report Case Closed: Final Report on the Roswell Crash. Here’s The New York Times on the report, the incident and the conspiracy theory that won’t go away…

On June 24, 1997, the Air Force released a 231-page report titled “Case Closed: Final Report on the Roswell Crash.” It suggested the alien bodies witnesses reported seeing in Roswell, N.M., in July 1947 were actually life-sized anthropomorphic test dummies.

The Times article from the following day summarized the essence of the report: “No bodies. No bulbous heads. No secret autopsies. No spaceship. No crash. No extraterrestrials or alien artifacts of any sort. And most emphatically of all, no government cover-up.”

The U.F.O. phenomenon, which had originated in mid-June 1947 when a recreational pilot reported seeing an object “flying like a saucer would” near Mount Rainier in Washington State. In early July, several witnesses reported seeing flying discs and strange debris on the ground in Roswell, N.M.

Public interest in the reports was ignited on July 8, 1947, when The Roswell Daily Record reported “the intelligence office of the 509th Bombardment group at Roswell Army Air Field announced at noon today, that the field has come into possession of a flying saucer.”

The United States government then began an effort, which lasted decades, to investigate and debunk the reports and thousands of similar reports from around the country. Public concern about U.F.O.’s waxed and waned over the next several decades, but never disappeared, fed in part by popular culture.
