Two years before Hunter S. Thompson took his own life in 2005 his Woody Creek, Colorado neighbor Wayne Ewing edited together years of video and film footage into a days-in-the-life-style documentary that captured HST drunk, drunk on stage, drugged, in trouble with the cops, visiting his home state of Kentucky, and trying to get Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas made into a film. Here’s Swampland with the word…

Breakfast With Hunter contains classic footage from Thompson’s Woody Creek, Colorado, ranch he calls Owl Farm. Guest appearances include Johnny Depp, Benecio Del Toro, Harry Dean Stanton, Terry Gilliam, Laila Nabulsi, John Cusack, and the late Warren Zevon.
Scenes with English artist Ralph Steadman whose paintings accompany many of Thompson’s writings prove interesting. Another scene details Thompson ambushing Rolling Stone mogul Jann Wenner with a fire extinguisher in his posh New York City office. Other footage features HST day in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky (also Depp’s hometown), as well as a stage appearance at Depp’s Viper Room.

The film chronicles the 25th Anniversary of Thompson’s classic book, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, including early stages for production, filming, and the premiere of the 1998 movie. A confrontation in Thompson’s kitchen erupts with a British writer over the Fear & Loathing script, which personifies Thompson’s spirit.

I’m not a big horror movie fan, but that’s mainly because so many of the sub-genres and trends tend to be so limiting: shocking for shock’s sake, gore for gore’s sake. I also think its because I was spoiled as a Generation X kid who grew up during horror’s most recent golden age when directors like Sam Raimi, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg and John Landis were regularly unleashing masterful films that included hilarious gags, sizzling dialog, intelligent acting and groundbreaking concepts. Add to this list the director that probably hits that sweet spot between fun and scary more often than most — John Carpenter.

For this spooky October post I’m pointing at this interview in the Post Mortem series of chats with horrormeisters. Here, Carpenter discusses growing up in Bowling Green, Kentucky; going to film school; making his breakthrough movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and Halloween; television versus film; independent versus studio filmmaking; ambiguous endings; and the difference between shock and suspense.

Here’s the video…

Continuing our spooky posts for the month of October, here’s a story about a cryptoid monster who’s said to inhabit a location near Pope Lick, Kentucky — it’s almost too good to be true.

Check out this take on the legend from this Impulcity post…

Okay, to be fair, this place should always be abandoned. What caught our attention here, though, is the local legend of the Goatman, who has apparently taken up residence below the train tracks. Many claim that they’ve seen this legend, but it seems to be one of those things that have just become a myth, but some people still cling to the fact that they’ve definitely seen something strange beneath there.

Whether the Goatman exists or not still remains in speculation. Either way, venturing below that trestle at night will definitely creep you out enough to not venture around and find out. Cars rarely pass through the area, and every little noise seems to be intensified. Something about possibly being in the presence of a psychotic man-bear-goat-thing just doesn’t sit well with us.

For me, the Goatman represents the contemporary echo of the probably ancient fear of the troll under the bridge. Bridges are dangerous and there have always been superstitions associated with passing over water or over a great height. Then again, the part of me that revels in unexpected discoveries is pulling for the horned one.

Here’s a hilarious documentary about the KY Goatman that I just added to my YouTube channel

According to my girlfriend, Bowling Green, Kentucky (her hometown) is known for two things: caves and Corvettes. The iconic sports cars are built there and the National Corvette Museum celebrates the city’s automotive legacy. The place is also sitting on top of limestone deposits that often give way into the Mammoth Cave system they form as they are eroded by water over time.

Today, this security cam video from inside the Corvette Museum appeared on YouTube. It captures a massive sinkhole opening beneath an exhibition of the cars, with two of the vehicles disappearing entirely…

As of this report, 8 cars are confirmed to have been swallowed by the gaping hole. Our deepest condolences go out to their widows and children.
