When Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York debuted in 2002, I didn’t go to see it right away, and when I finally did I remember feeling like it seemed sort of silly, and that Cameron Diaz was terrible. Diaz is still a weak link for me, but a recent article on Medium got me interested in watching the film again, and revisiting its themes of race, anti-immigration, corrupt politics, and the specter of “foreign influence” through the lens of America in 2017. It’s a great piece by Daniel Suarez. Here’s a bite…

A few days ago I re-watched Gangs of New York, and it brought home to me something relevant to our present political situation: America’s divisions on immigration, race, class, religion, and ‘foreign influences’ have always been with us. In fact, those divisions have been far worse in the past. Nonetheless, we still survived as a nation, moved beyond our instinctive fears, and achieved remarkable things together.

Americans might not like to hear it, but throughout our history we have seldom lived up to our rhetoric on liberty and justice. From the outset we were an imperfect experiment in democracy (with slavery, genocide against indigenous people, civil rights violations, limited suffrage). Given our differences, America was constantly at risk of imploding or exploding.
That we are here at all is a testament to the many activists and idealists who ignored the tide of human history, ignored their personal safety, ignored our longstanding ethnic and religious hatreds, our class divisions, and more — and urged us toward our professed ideals. Every advance we have made as a nation can be attributed to the greater openness and diversity they championed in the face of intimidating odds.

This is on full display in Gangs of New York — but you have to look closely to see it.

Read the rest of this illuminating article at the link above — trust me if you are having a panic attack about the end of democracy this will give you some needed perspective. This YouTube link isn’t the best way to enjoy a movie that I’ve come to love more on every viewing, but it’s enough to see that we’ve come a long way even if we still have a long way to go.

Dead Rabbits, forever!

In celebration of its 15th birthday, here’s the film…

So just another Sunday night sitting down to get a post together for Monday morning when I stumble upon this science story that has researchers wondering if chimpanzees are worshiping a god in Guinea…

The discovery defied explanation. A researcher studying chimpanzees in the savannahs of the Republic of Guinea was baffled by a strangely scarred tree she had found.

Laura Kehoe, a PhD student at Humboldt University in Berlin, wondered whether it was the work of the chimps.
So she set up a remote camera and it showed that chimpanzees were indeed behind it. A group had approached the tree and behaved in a highly unusual way.

Some of them threw stones at the tree for no apparent reason, which explained the scars. Others gathered stones and laid them at the foot of the tree, creating a rough cairn. This was no idle play.

The chimps were fully committed to their stone-throwing and cairn-building, and yet on the face of it, their behaviour appeared to serve no purpose whatsoever.

Getting started on the blog a day late this week. Spent the day yesterday driving back to Nashville from a visit to Asheville, NC. We had a gloomy, but pretty-in-a-melancholy-way drive through the Smokies on Friday, but yesterday low temps and rain made it a pretty slow, tense drive, and didn’t leave a lot of time for blogging. By the time we got back we opted for tacos and margaritas and pretended it was Sunday.

This week we celebrate the birthday of Galileo Galilei on February 15, 1642. Galileo was a telescope pioneer persecuted by the Catholic Church for affirming Copernican notions of a heliocentric universe. In Galileo’s time science, magic and religion were divided by porous, shifting lines that make it hard for us to look back and separate the sorcerers from the scientists.

Here’s a two-part documentary that illuminates the magical roots of science, giving us a glimpse at Galileo and his world…

Religion is a lot of things, but most obviously we can distinguish one sect, order, school or institution from another through their trappings: robes, candles, books, paintings, statues, gestures, poses and music. Music is central to faiths all over the world – songs are emissaries of religious stories, time capsules of historical events and they teach lessons about morals and dogma. No matter how weird or way out your cult may be, chances are it’s got music.

Here’s a great short video on the music that’s been inspired by Scientology. Some of it is surprisingly funky. All of it is bizarre…

Taking a break from our spooky October posts here at the end of the month — we’ll let today’s merrymaking bring its own hard-earned scares — here’s a great little show from Canadian television that I stumbled upon the other day. Prisoners of Gravity was an interview show disguised as a pirate broadcast, covering all sorts of books, films and art through a countercultural lens to dazzling effect. The series aired 139 episodes over 5 seasons from 1989 to 1994. Here’s the word from the Wiki…

As established through a comic-strip montage opening sequence drawn by Ty Templeton, the premise held that a fan of speculative fiction becomes disturbed by news broadcasts describing the alarming state of the world and decides he must escape. He broadcasts his show each week from an orbiting space station. The show’s presentation was fully wrapped in its quirky premise, featuring on-screen graphics and background sounds to simulate a space station atmosphere, “using active, innovative cinematography to ease the visual boredom that often accompanies interviews with talking head(s).”

The week’s topic was introduced with a few opening thoughts before launching into various interview clips. In each episode, Rick would interview a number of authors and artists, along with filmmakers, animators, and the occasional futurist. Topics that were discussed ran the gamut: censorship, superheroes, humour, religion, fairy tales, Mars, cyberpunk, war, overpopulation, sex… Episodes were 30 minutes in length (having no commercial breaks on public television) and typically showcased six to fourteen interviewed creators alongside bridging commentary from Rick. Roughly six-hundred interviews were conducted and aired by the time the show’s run came to an end.

Prisoners has its own YouTube channel and this playlist is a bit chaotic so you’ll need to bounce around a bit to follow episode to episode. I’ve set the video in this post to start with the first segment of an episode that deals with racism because it dovetails so nicely with the recent news about Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther film. Here’s a bit about that from The Guardian…

The newly announced films are two-part Avengers sequel Infinity War and a Captain America movie called Civil War, alongside new film outings for Doctor Strange and – most interestingly – Black Panther.

The latter will be Marvel’s first lead black superhero, and it’s a breakthrough moment. The positioning of this ethnic minority as heroic – however tortured that heroism may likely be – is a valuable statement in this most high profile of US pop cultural products, in a year when the dominant media image of black men has been as subordinated to (often white) police.

My favorite thrill with this show comes at the beginning of every episode when it seems like a program called Second Nature goes to static and is “interrupted” by the program — so retro-meta I wanna roll around in back issues of Mondo 2000. Enjoy Prisoners of Gravity…

Sir Isaac Newton invented calculus, figured out the composition of light, and also gave us the laws of gravity and motion which just happened to govern the entire universe at the time of their revelations. Sir Isaac Newton is considered to be the father of modern science. He was also a sorcerer.

This documentary follows Newton through a rather recent history where science and superstition intermingled and inspired one another into a modern conundrum where we’re faced with the fact that our contemporary understanding of the reality is deeply rooted in Christian heresy and a belief in the occult.

Newton may have been the first great scientist. He may have also been the last great magician.
