What up pims?
Hope y’all in these here U.S. states had a fine state of mind on the 4th of July. I became an unsuccessful fisherman that day, although what is unsuccessful about water and sunshine and a silver spoon flashing in the light of liberty?
Now I nurse this sunburn and write these words in a coffee cafe in Nashville that always gets over-run with flies in the summertime. If that seems nasty its only because it is. Their lazy buzz and distracting, stilted movements lending an autumnal macabre to the bright wet afternoon of summer.
All of this and more…
Check out this site to catch up on the latest installments of my series on the history of Memphis soul music. It’s the 50th anniversary of Stax and I have been given a really fun opportunity to be a part of this new website. Check it out and drop Mary Kay (the proud proprietor) a line and let her know what you think.
Speaking of music history, I don’t know if Phil Spector is guilty of murder, but he is definitely responsible for creating some of the best music of the 20th Century. Not only did he have his girl-band hey-day, but he was responsible for Lennon and Harrison’s best solo work and even made a record with the Ramones that many consider their best. One way or the other I hope justice is served, but part of the justice this guy deserves is that we remain ever grateful for the moving music he helped to invent.
Never confuse the art and the artist. To easy. Kinda silly.
Have an enjoyable day today. I woke up in a great mood after an unusually suitable amount of sleep and don’t have the heart to fill this page with too much ranting and raving about freedom and tyranny and the coming global nightmare…whoops…there I go again…
In the meantime, remember that you can change your own mind, and no matter how great the resistance, there are still trails to be blazed by the light of new-burning visions.
Follow the example of those who have come before you.
I have not invented a “new style,” composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from “this” method or “that” method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see “ourselves”. . . Jeet Kune Do is not an organized institution that one can be a member of. Either you understand or you don’t, and that is that. There is no mystery about my style. My movements are simple, direct and non-classical. The extraordinary part of it lies in its simplicity. Every movement in Jeet Kune-Do is being so of itself. There is nothing artificial about it. I always believe that the easy way is the right way. Jeet Kune-Do is simply the direct expression of one’s feelings with the minimum of movements and energy. The closer to the true way of Kung Fu, the less wastage of expression there is. Finally, a Jeet Kune Do man who says Jeet Kune Do is exclusively Jeet Kune Do is simply not with it. He is still hung up on his self-closing resistance, in this case anchored down to reactionary pattern, and naturally is still bound by another modified pattern and can move within its limits. He has not digested the simple fact that truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness is never exclusive. Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one’s back.
