This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up. A movie about images, the first time I saw through the film’s most superficial layers I was in the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, TN. I think it was during a Noir Fest screening — it was a double-feature with De Palma’s Blowout. Again, this is a movie about images, but it was through the sound system in the theatre that I got soundtrack clues that revealed some amazing secrets I’d never heard watching and listening to a DVD at home. The movie that taught me how crucial sound might be to a film’s plot is a film about images.
