Another spooky October post, this one examines the horrors that can happen during a close encounter with an alien. However, this isn’t about anal probes or lost time, this is a famous story that illuminates the way that fantasy and religious thinking can obscure all reason when it comes to a belief in alien visitors.
Billy Meier is one of the most famous alien contactees ever. His photographs of U.F.O.’s and aliens are claimed to be among the most thoroughly vetted and verified. They are also claimed to be amateurish frauds that have been completely discredited by experts and, frankly, one doesn’t have to be much of an expert to see through Meier’s claims.
The silliest assertion Meier made was that he was in contact with a beautiful female alien named Asket. To prove his point, Meier took a photo of the blond extraterrestrial. What a boon it would have been to capture a real space alien with a camera lens. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for that landmark image. Meier’s photo is obviously a picture of a television singer and dancer that he snapped off of a broadcast of a Dean Martin television program.
The silly story behind Meier and his wacky assertion is entertaining, but what’s most interesting about this video is the narrator’s irrational defense of Meier’s obvious forgeries. This kind of belief in U.F.O. visitors always has a messianic overtone — the aliens are loving and all powerful and are guiding us through a troubling time before they reveal themselves and absolve us of all of our responsibilities to the planet and to one another. The kind of thinking that leads to blind religious devotion is paralleled in alien contactee culture where the same impulses find people willing to accept unsubstantiated speculations as facts and to deny empirical evidence as heresy against their outlandish beliefs. I believe there is life on other planets. I also believe Billy Meier is a liar.
