I’ve been obsessing over Withnail & I lately. I think it’s because I’m hoping to get Bruce Robinson’s new book about the Jack the Ripper murders for Christmas. Turns out the writer/director of that great cult film is also a vintage crime researcher who counts many screen credits that might come as a surprise: he played Benvolio in Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet and he won an Academy Award for his screenplay for the devastating The Killing Fields.
I’ve always admired wide-ranging thinkers and artists, and Robinson certainly makes that cut. Here’s a great little documentary I found on YouTube. It’s a super funny and insightful look at one of cinema’s most gifted oddballs…
