I saw a preview screening of Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast film based on their classic 1991 animated adaptation of the 18th century fairy tale. Fans of the Disney cartoon will find a lot to like here. It’s not as good or as groundbreaking as the animated movie, but it does justice to it. I’m publishing a review in next week’s Contributor. If you’re in Nashville pick one up from your favorite vendor next Monday.
In the meantime, here’s this Faerie Tale Theatre version of the story featuring Susan Sarandon as Belle, and none other than Werner Herzog’s best fiend, Klaus Kinski as the Beast! Kinski’s look is a direct reference to the monster in Jean Cocteau’s 1946 masterpiece screen adaptation of the story, and the Faerie Tale Theatre version also restores Belle’s wicked sisters, and cast her father as a down-and-out merchant instead of a starving artist/tinkerer.
It’s OK if you just fast forward to all of the Kinski scenes. You’ll love it…
