I love Open Culture’s treasure trove of free and accessible media. So many great things to find there. If you’re on Twitter you should follow OC @openculture. Every tweet is like opening a surprise and yesterday I discovered that all of Jack Kerouac’s recorded works are available for listening on the site through their curating of the Spotify playlists for each of Jack’s three albums. Like most I became a fan of Kerouac’s prose when I was in college, but I didn’t care for his poetry until I heard him perform it on these records. The minute I heard Kerouac reading his verses I immediately understood all of the humor and pathos I’d missed when I read them myself. It’s important to remember that poetry is something we’re supposed to hear, and not just read. I love browsing a book of poems as much as anyone might, but a book of poems is a lot more like a musical score meant to inform a live performance than a short story meant to bloom inside the reader’s head. Check these for yourself here.
